I think 39mm is a perfect size for my wrist, (I own a MkII) I think the 36 is only a win for people whose wrist suit that size. Patek are boring, the big watch this year for me is the new VC perpetual in white gold, blue dial, my new grail.
My issue with the 39mm Explorer isn't a religious zeal for a particular size but rather that the proportions of the watch were perfect on the 36mm version and somehow are wrong on the 39mm.
I understand the unfathomable balls up with the MK1 and the short hands (Rolex don’t get enough abuse for shitting the bed, cough cough Air King & TT Explorer) but I always felt the 39mm mkII was a nice scale up. I don’t mind the 36mm and it’s historic proportions, and don’t critique it, merely don’t agree that it’s the necessary ‘proper’ size, for the celebratory 50th anniversary I think a one year only, fully brushed yellow gold would have been boss, JPS vibes.
I am not a watch aficionado by any means. I own a lot of watches but only one of them would perhaps elicit any interest from the two hosts of this podcast. That said, I truly enjoyed this podcast. Andrew and Eric have great chemistry, presenting their reviews from the point of view of the uber fan and their enthusiasm is completely contagious. I loved how their analysis of new watch models included a bit of history, which added an extra layer to the points they make in their reviews of the new models. Their love of watches and their love humor shines through (they are very funny!) making this worth a listen. And if you are thinking about investing in an expensive timepiece, Andrew and Eric give you a lot to consider.
